How To Get an RCMP Criminal Record Check from UK

Applying for an RCMP criminal record check from UK is not as simple as filling out a form online. If anything, it’s far from it. Your fingerprints need to be taken on paper, sent to Canada, digitized by an accredited agency, and then submitted to the RCMP in Ottawa. If you have lived or worked in Canada at any point and are now applying for a visa, a job, or immigration from UK, this is likely the document you have been asked for. A lot of people applying from UK run into problems because the process is spread across two countries and involves steps that are easy to get wrong.

This blog covers the full process. What the check actually is, who needs it, how to get fingerprinted in UK, how to submit correctly, and how to get the document apostilled once it is ready.

What is an RCMP Criminal Record Check?

An RCMP Criminal Record Check is an official document issued by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) that shows whether you have a criminal record in Canada. It searches Canada's national criminal database and confirms your criminal history, or confirms that you have none. It is the highest level of background check available in Canada. When an international employer, immigration authority, or government department asks for a Canadian criminal record check, this certified document is usually what they mean.

You will most commonly need this if you are applying for a UK visa, a job that requires background screening, immigration to another country, or a position working with vulnerable people or children.

Before we get into the details, check out the actual meaning of some of the terms you will come across:

TermWhat It Actually Means
RCMPRoyal Canadian Mounted Police, Canada's national police force, equivalent to UK's Metropolitan/ National Crime Agency.
CCRTISCanadian Criminal Real Time Identification Services, the RCMP department that actually processes the check.
C-216CThe official fingerprint form you'll need to fill in.
Fingerprint-Based CheckTied to your biometrics.
Name-Based CheckTied to just your Name and DOB.

Name-Based vs Fingerprint-Based

There are two ways the RCMP can run a criminal record check on you, and it matters which one you get:

  • Name-Based Check: This check searches the Canadian National Repository of Criminal Records using only your legal name and date of birth. It is usually issued by local Canadian police departments or third-party private screening companies. This type of check is mainly used for basic job screening in Canada, but it is not accepted by immigration authorities like IRCC or for official international applications. It tends to be used in lower-stakes situations where the requesting authority does not specifically require fingerprints.
  • Fingerprint-Based Check: This check searches the official database using your actual fingerprints, making it the most accurate and secure check available. You will need to fill in the C-216C form and have your fingerprints taken, which can be done through an accredited fingerprint agency. It is issued directly by the RCMP headquarters in Ottawa on official security paper. This is the only check accepted for Canadian immigration, visa applications, adoption, foreign employment, and official UK background checks.

Check Out RCMP vs Name-Based Police Checks: What UK Applicants Really Need for Canada

I Only Lived in Canada for 6 Months. Do I Still Need an RCMP Criminal Record Check?

This is one of the most searched questions by UK readers applying for this check, and it rarely gets a straight answer. The general rule from international authorities is that you need an RCMP criminal record check if you have lived in Canada for six months or more in a row at any point in your life.

But it gets more specific depending on where you are applying:

  • If you were on a Working Holiday Visa, IEC, or Student Visa: If your total stay in Canada was 6 months or longer, you likely need to submit an RCMP criminal record check, even if you returned to UK years ago.
  • If you were a temporary foreign worker: The same 6-month rule applies to temporary work stays, regardless of the province you lived in.
  • If you stayed for less than 6 months: You generally do not need an RCMP criminal record check unless IRCC or another requesting authority specifically sends you a request letter asking for one.
  • If you only transited through Canada: Passing through a Canadian airport or taking a short holiday under 6 months does not trigger the requirement.
  • If you are applying from UK, Australia, New Zealand, or certain other countries: The requesting authority may set their own requirements that are stricter than the IRCC standard. Some require the Canadian criminal record check even for stays shorter than six months.
ACRO Police Certificate vs RCMP Criminal Record Check: Don't Apply For The Wrong One

It’s surprisingly easy to get these two documents confused, especially if you have lived in both UK and Canada. If you lived in Canada and are now back in UK, you need both documents separately. Your UK police certificate covers your time in UK. It says nothing about what happened while you were living in Canada. These are two different documents, issued by two different countries, and no single one can replace the other.

Step-By-Step Process: Applying for an RCMP Criminal Record Check in UK

Step 1: Choose an Accredited Fingerprinting Agency in Canada

You cannot send your fingerprint card directly to the RCMP. The RCMP only accepts submissions made electronically by accredited Canadian companies. So your first step is to find and contact an RCMP-accredited fingerprinting agency based in Canada. They will guide you through the rest of the process and handle the submission on your behalf. Some also offer a full service that includes help with fingerprinting, document review, and delivery back to you in UK.

Step 2: Obtain the Correct Fingerprint Form

Anyone applying from outside Canada, including UK, must submit fingerprints on the official C-216C form or equivalent. This is the official form for submitting fingerprints internationally. Your chosen agency will usually courier this form to you as a part of the fingerprinting kit.

Step 3: Get Your Fingerprints Taken in UK

Next, arrange to have your fingerprints taken on official paper stock. During the appointment, the official will roll your fingers in black ink onto the paper card. Make sure the technician completes, signs, dates, and official-stamps the card.

Step 4: Send Your Documents to the Accredited Agency in Canada

Once your fingerprints are done, you will need to mail the original fingerprint card to your accredited agency in Canada. Along with it, you will also need to include:

  • Two colour photocopies of two valid government-issued IDs, one of which must be a photo ID such as a passport or driving licence.
  • Any completed application forms required by the agency.

Step 5: The Agency Submits to the RCMP

The agency will convert your inked fingerprints into digital format and submit them electronically to the RCMP. Once submitted, you will receive a confirmation with a tracking reference number, depending on the agency chosen and their scope of services provided.

Step 6: The RCMP Processes Your Application

If there is no match in the criminal records database, the RCMP usually processes the check within 3 business days of receiving the digital submission. If a criminal history is found, or if manual processing is required, processing times can extend to 120 days or more.

Step 7: Receive Your Certificate

The RCMP sends the certificate back to the accredited provider. You can then receive it by courier to your UK address or as a digital copy, depending on the provider's policies.

Where To Get Fingerprinted in UK for an RCMP Criminal Record Check

To get a Canadian criminal record check while living in UK, you must get traditional ink-and-roll fingerprints taken on physical paper cards. Digital prints taken directly in UK cannot be sent straight to Canada on their own. You have three main options for getting your ink fingerprints taken in UK. All of them can take the ink fingerprints you need, but they work a little differently.

Option 1: Local Police Stations

Many local police forces in UK offer public fingerprinting services for international background checks. This is the most widely available option, especially if you live outside a major city.

There are a few important things you need to know before you go:

  • Appointments Required: Not all stations take walk-ins for fingerprinting, so always call ahead. Each police station has different booking procedures.
  • Bring Valid ID: Most stations only accept a valid passport or photo card driving licence as identification for this service.
  • Bring the C-216C Form: This is the RCMP's fingerprint form and it must be the one used. Get it from your RCMP-accredited processing agency before your appointment. The officer taking your prints needs to use this specific form.

The Metropolitan Police in Scotland Yard, London, offers scheduled fingerprinting appointments for London residents. If you’re outside London, regional police can usually take fingerprints at designated headquarters.

Some well-known police stations that offer this service include:

Police ForceLocation
City of London PoliceLondon
Thames Valley PoliceKidlington, Oxford
Hertfordshire Constabulary HQWelwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire
West Midlands PoliceBirmingham
Greater Manchester PoliceManchester
Avon and Somerset Police HQPortishead, Bristol
St Leonards Police StationEdinburgh
Govan Police StationGlasgow

Check your local force's website to find the nearest fingerprinting location and their current booking process.

Option 2: Private Fingerprinting Companies

Private fingerprinting companies in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, and Glasgow offer this service and are usually faster than police stations. If you want a quicker appointment or prefer a more guided experience, this is worth considering. Some private companies may also provide additional services, including scanning your completed card, submitting it to the RCMP on your behalf, and tracking your results.

Option 3: Mobile Fingerprinting Services

Some of the private services providers also offer mobile fingerprinting, where a trained associate visits your home or office at a time of your preference. This is a good option if you have a busy schedule or limited mobility, and cannot visit a fingerprinting center. For most UK applicants, this tends to be the most popular choice. You are not just getting your fingerprints taken, but getting the whole process handled under one roof. The convenience of staying home is a bonus.

Getting an Apostille for Your RCMP Criminal Record Check from UK

You have your RCMP certificate. That is the hard part done. But for most UK applicants, there is one final step before the document can actually be used, which is getting it apostilled.

What Is an Apostille?

An apostille is like a stamp or certificate attached to a public document that confirms the document is genuine and was issued by a recognized authority. It is the international standard for verifying official documents between countries. Any country that has signed the Hague Apostille Convention will issue apostille certificates and in turn recognize apostille certificates issued by other countries.

Why You Cannot Skip This Step

Without an apostille, your RCMP criminal record check is valid inside Canada, but it carries no official weight elsewhere. Authentication or apostille is required for Canadian documents to be approved for use in other countries. Through this process, the validity of the official's signature on the document is confirmed. A UK employer, a visa authority, or an immigration department in another country will not just accept a foreign police certificate as is. The apostille is what tells them the document is real and came from an official source.

How To Get Canada Apostille from UK

For federally issued documents like the RCMP criminal record check, the apostille can only be affixed by Global Affairs Canada. Since you are based in UK, you have two ways to do this:

Option 1: Mail to the High Commission of Canada in London

The Canadian High Commission in London can authenticate certain documents issued by the Government of Canada, including fingerprint based criminal record checks issued by the RCMP. This is the closer and more convenient option for UK residents since you are mailing within the country rather than internationally.

Send your original certificate to:

High Commission of Canada

Attn: Consular Section

Canada House

Trafalgar Square

London, SW1Y 5BJ

Consular services operate Monday to Friday, 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM, by appointment. Email london.consular@international.gc.ca to confirm current requirements and any updates before you send your documents.

Option 2: Mail Directly to Global Affairs Canada in Ottawa

If you prefer to go directly to the source, you can courier your certificate to Global Affairs Canada's Authentication Services Section in Ottawa.

Send your original RCMP criminal record check to:

Authentication Services Section

Global Affairs Canada

2421 Lancaster Road

Ottawa, Ontario

Their office operates Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, except on Canadian statutory holidays. You have to address your envelope specifically to the Authentication Services Section to make sure it reaches the right department.

7 Common Mistakes UK Applicants Make

Applying for an RCMP criminal record check from outside Canada has strict rules. A small error can delay your certificate by weeks or cause a complete rejection.

Listed below are the seven most common mistakes UK applicants make and how you can avoid them:

  1. Trying to Mail Fingerprints Directly to the RCMP

The RCMP headquarters in Ottawa does not accept physical fingerprint cards mailed directly from outside Canada. If you post your paper C-216C card directly to the RCMP, they will return or reject it. You must send your physical fingerprint card to an accredited Canadian digitizing agency.

2. Ordering a Name-Based Check Instead of a Fingerprint Check

Many applicants try to save time by ordering a basic Canadian criminal record check online using just their name and date of birth. While these are quick, immigration authorities like IRCC and UK Home Office will reject them. You need to confirm that you are applying for the fingerprint-based check. It is the only version printed on official RCMP security paper.

3. Submitting Low-Quality or Smudged Ink Prints

If your ink fingerprints are smudged, faint, or incomplete, the RCMP scanner will not be able to read them. Poor quality prints are one of the top reasons for application rejections. We advise you to use a well-hydrated hand cream for a few days before your appointment so your hands are not too dry. Ask your fingerprint technician to take two separate full sets of prints on two cards so you have a backup.

4. Name and ID Mismatches

If the name on your UK passport does not match the name on your fingerprint card or Canadian submission forms, your file will be flagged. Common issues include missing middle names, maiden names, or minor spelling variations. To avoid this, it’s best to double-check every single document before posting. Make sure your full legal name is written identically across your passport, driver's licence, and fingerprint form.

5. Forgetting the Required Canadian Consent Form

When you use a Canadian digitizing agency to forward your prints to the RCMP, you must give them legal permission to handle your personal information. Omitting the signed consent form halts processing immediately. Make sure your application packet includes the third-party consent form provided by your chosen Canadian digitizer, signed and dated.

6. Sending Fingerprint Cards by Untracked Post

Your fingerprint card is an original document. Once it is gone, it is gone. You should always use a tracked courier service such as Royal Mail International Tracked and Signed or DHL UK. Do not send original documents by untracked regular post.

7. Signing the C-216C Form Before Your Appointment

It might make sense to fill in and sign all your application paperwork at home to save time. But pre-signing the official C-216C fingerprint card will make the form invalid. The RCMP requires your signature on the form to be witnessed directly by the authorized police officer or fingerprint technician taking your prints. They must verify your government-issued photo ID and confirm your identity before you sign.

So, fill out your personal details in advance if you wish, but leave the signature box completely blank. Wait until you are sitting in front of the fingerprint official during your UK appointment, and sign the card only when they ask you to do so.
