Documents Required for Canadians Moving to Australia

Moving to Australia requires a complete set of verified documents covering your identity, education, work history, health, and finances. Australian immigration is highly detail-focused, meaning documents must not only exist they must be correct, consistent, and properly formatted.

Missing or unclear paperwork is one of the most common reasons applications are delayed, so preparation is critical.

Identity Documents

These documents establish your legal identity and are required for almost every visa type.

  • Valid Canadian passport (must remain valid for the full intended stay in Australia)
  • Canadian birth certificate issued by your provincial vital statistics office
  • Marriage certificate or legal name change documents (if applicable)
  • Recent passport-style photos meeting Australian immigration specifications

Your passport is the central document in your application. Immigration authorities review all pages, including stamps, visas, and travel history, so it should be submitted in full (not just the photo page).

If your name has changed over time, ensure all documents are consistent or supported by official proof linking old and new names.

Education Credentials

Education documents are essential for skilled migration and student visas. They are used to verify that your qualifications meet Australian standards.

  • Degree, diploma, or trade certificate (certified copy)
  • Official academic transcripts showing all subjects and grades
  • Professional certifications or licenses relevant to your occupation

Australian assessing bodies do not evaluate your university reputation they evaluate qualification level and relevance. A Bachelor’s degree from Canada is generally treated the same regardless of institution, as long as it meets equivalency standards.

Work Experience Documents

Work experience documentation is one of the most important and sensitive parts of the application, especially for skilled migration.

You will need:

  • Detailed employer reference letters
  • Employment contracts (if available)
  • Recent pay slips or payroll summaries
  • CRA Notice of Assessment (to confirm income history)

Ask your previous managers to rewrite your reference letters using the ANZSCO task list as a framework. Most managers are willing  they just don't know what 'detailed' means to Australian immigration authorities until you show them the standard. The letter must include: your exact job title, employment start and end dates, hours per week, and a paragraph-by-paragraph description of your actual tasks matching the ANZSCO description as closely as possible.

For example, “Project Manager” must show specific tasks like planning, budgeting, stakeholder management, and delivery oversight, not just a general statement that you managed projects.

Self-employed applicants must provide additional proof such as tax filings, client contracts, invoices, and business registration documents.

Police Certificates

Criminal Record Checks are required to prove you meet Australia’s character requirements.

For Canadians, this includes:

  • RCMP Criminal Record Check (federal-level clearance)
  • Provincial or local police checks (depending on where you live)
  • Overseas police certificates (for any country lived in 12+ months since age 16)

The RCMP check is the most important Canadian document and should be requested specifically for immigration purposes. It must be recent or issued within the last 12 months.

If you have lived in multiple provinces, you may need separate checks for each jurisdiction.

The RCMP criminal record check takes 3 to 8 weeks by mail, faster through accredited fingerprinting channels. If you've lived in multiple provinces or overseas for more than 12 months since age 16, you need separate certificates from each jurisdiction. Most applicants only discover this after receiving their invitation when they have 60 days left to lodge a complete application. Order police checks the same week you start your skills assessment, not after you receive your invitation.

Medical Exams

All applicants for most long-term Australian visas must undergo a medical examination through an approved Panel Physician.

This includes:

  • General physical examination
  • Chest X-ray (for tuberculosis screening)
  • Blood tests (depending on age and visa type)
  • Additional tests if requested based on medical history

Important points:

  • You cannot use your family doctor or a walk-in clinic
  • You must attend an Australian government-approved Panel Physician
  • Results are submitted electronically via the HAP system
  • You receive a HAP ID instead of paper results

Medical results are generally valid for 12 months. If your visa processing takes longer than this, you may be asked to repeat the exam.

Book your medical exam through an approved Panel Physician only the list is on the Home Affairs website. Walk-in clinics and family doctors cannot perform the HAP examination. In Toronto and Vancouver, appointment wait times can stretch to 3 to 4 weeks during peak periods. Medical results are valid for 12 months. If your visa processing runs longer, you may need to redo the exam. Factor this into your planning if you have a lower points score that may take time to reach invitation.

Financial Documents

Financial documents are required mainly for student visas and some temporary or skilled pathways.

Common requirements include:

  • Bank statements ( last 3–6 months)
  • Proof of savings or investment accounts
  • Employment income proof (payslips or tax documents)
  • CRA Notice of Assessment for income verification

These documents are used to confirm that you can support yourself financially during your stay or meet visa eligibility requirements.

Consistency is important. Sudden unexplained large deposits can raise questions, so financial history should look stable and traceable.

Key Things

Australian visa applications are not just about having documents they are about proving your background in a very specific format.

The most important success factors are:

  • Work reference letters that clearly match ANZSCO duties
  • Early preparation of police checks across all required provinces/countries
  • Timely medical exams through approved Panel Physicians
  • Consistent, verifiable financial and identity records
  • Applicants who prepare these documents early and correctly experience significantly smoother processing and fewer delays.

Note on apostilles: Australia does not require apostilles for documents. Submit originals or certified copies as directed by the assessing authority.
