Activate the account in-branch on arrival with your passport and visa confirmation. A debit card is issued same-day or couriered within 3 days.
An IRD number is NZ's equivalent of a Social Insurance Number. You cannot legally be employed in NZ without one. Apply at myIR in your first week. You need your NZ bank account number, passport, and visa details. Processing takes 8 to 15 working days.
If you start work before your IRD number arrives, inform your employer. Tax is withheld at 45% until the number is provided - any overpayment is reconciled in your annual tax return.

KiwiSaver and RRSP are separate systems. RRSP funds cannot be contributed to KiwiSaver, and KiwiSaver withdrawals are not treated as RRSP income in Canada.
*April 2026 change: KiwiSaver default contribution rates increased from 3% to 3.5% for both employees and employers. If you prefer to stay at 3%, apply to opt down at ird.govt.nz before your first NZ pay period.
* *As of July 2025, the KiwiSaver government contribution is $260.72/year (IRD) - the government contributes 25 cents for every dollar you contribute, up to a maximum of $260.72 annually. You must contribute at least $1,042.86 in the KiwiSaver financial year (July 1 to June 30) to receive the full amount. Note: this rate was halved from $521.43 effective July 1, 2025. Verify current rates at ird.govt.nz/kiwisaver.
