*NZ figures reflect the 20 Hours ECE subsidy for children aged 3–5.
Cars. The used car market relies on Japanese imports. A reliable 2019 Toyota Corolla costs NZD $18,000 to $24,000. In Canada the same car trades at $15,000 to $19,000 CAD. The premium is real.
Electronics. A mid-range laptop costing $1,200 CAD in Canada costs $1,800 to $2,100 NZD in New Zealand. Import duties, 15% GST, and a smaller retail market all contribute.
Winter heating. NZ homes lack the insulation and central heating Canadians expect. A heat pump running 6 to 8 hours daily in a Wellington two-bedroom adds $120 to $220 NZD per month to the electricity bill in winter.
Domestic flights. Auckland to Queenstown return, booked 2 weeks out: $400 to $700 NZD. The two islands have no road or rail link - inter-island travel is a recurring cost.
GP visits. Enrolled patients at a community health centre pay $15 to $50 NZD per standard consultation. Walk-in rates are $80 to $150 NZD.
Accident cover (ACC): New Zealand's no-fault accident compensation scheme - is funded through wage levies. Personal accident insurance is not needed once you are enrolled.
Childcare (ages 3–5): The 20 Hours ECE subsidy applies at any licensed childcare provider. A child under 3 years costs $1,400 to $2,200 NZD per month for full-time care - significantly less than comparable Canadian cities.

On a CAD $100,000 transfer, the difference between a bank wire (3% margin = $3,000 CAD lost) and Wise (0.5% = $500 CAD) is $2,500 CAD. Use a specialist service for any transfer above CAD $10,000.
