The first week has four priority tasks. Everything else can wait.
| Priority | Task | Why It Can't Wait |
| 1 | Activate NZ bank account in-branch | Needed for IRD number application |
| 2 | Apply for IRD number at myIR | Without it, 45% tax is withheld from wages |
| 3 | Enrol with a local GP at Health Point | Enrolled patients pay $15–$50 NZD vs $80–$150 walk-in |
| 4 | Buy a local SIM card (Spark recommended) | Communication and 2FA codes from day one |
Week 2: Convert your Canadian driver's licence at any VTNZ or VINZ testing station. You have 12 months from arrival - do not wait. Bring your Canadian licence, visa evidence, and NZD $42.40. An eyesight test is conducted on-site. After 12 months, a full NZ licence process is required.
Enrol children in school. Bring: lease agreement as proof of address, previous school reports, vaccination records, and birth certificates.
Week 3 to 4: Register your NZ address with the High Commission of Canada in New Zealand through the registration form at travel.gc.ca. This allows consular contact in a national emergency - it is free and takes 10 minutes.
Update your address in CRA My Account. This is part of your Canadian tax residency severance record.
Purchase a vehicle. In Auckland and Christchurch, a car is necessary. In Wellington, it is optional for CBD residents. Search at Trade Me Motors. A reliable 2020 Toyota Corolla: NZD $20,000 to $26,000. A 2016 Honda Jazz: NZD $14,000 to $18,000.
