There is no dedicated retirement visa for Canadians. This is the most common misunderstanding among Canadians researching retirement in NZ.

The Temporary Retirement Visitor Visa allows retirees aged 66 or older to stay up to 2 years. It requires NZD $750,000 in NZ investments, private health insurance, and a NZ family sponsor. It does not provide a pathway to permanent residency.

The Parent Resident Visa is the primary pathway for Canadian parents of NZ-resident or citizen adult children. The sponsoring child must earn at least the NZ median wage (approximately NZD $62,000 as of 2026). The visa is subject to an annual ballot. Wait times of 5 to 10 years are common. CPP and OAS are payable to Canadians living in New Zealand. CRA applies 25% non-resident withholding tax, which is reducible to 15% under the Canada–NZ Tax Treaty. The Canada–NZ Social Security Agreement coordinates contribution periods in both countries' pension systems.

NZ Superannuation - the government-paid retirement benefit at age 65 - requires residency in NZ for at least 10 years after age 20, with at least 5 of those years after age 50. A Canadian arriving at age 55 on a resident visa qualifies after exactly 10 years of residency.

NZ Super is subject to an overseas pension offset. CPP and OAS income is counted against your NZ Super entitlement. A Canadian receiving full CPP and OAS may receive significantly reduced NZ Super.
